How to choose a hospital in India for knee replacement
Hospital selection should compare the facility, orthopaedic team, patient-specific estimate, safety systems, rehabilitation, international-patient support, and follow-up—not only a brand name or advertised price.
Start with the facility and orthopaedic department
Ask which facility and legal entity would provide care, whether the relevant orthopaedic department can assess the patient's case, what emergency and intensive-care support is available, and how the hospital handles infection prevention, blood management, physiotherapy, and complications.
If the hospital describes an accreditation, confirm the facility, current status, scope, and date. Do not convert accreditation into a guarantee or use it as the only selection criterion.
Ask about the clinician and proposed procedure
Request the clinician's role, the proposed procedure, examination and test requirements, implant assumptions, expected stay, rehabilitation plan, risks, alternatives, and follow-up pathway. The patient should have an opportunity to speak with the treating team before committing to travel.
A facilitator may coordinate the enquiry and collect comparable information, but the patient and clinician decide whether to proceed.
Compare the estimate and payment boundary

Ask whether the patient pays the hospital directly and which services belong to the facilitator or third parties.
Keep the hospital estimate separate from flights, visa, accommodation, transport, companion expenses, rehabilitation, insurance, and contingency funds. Confirm cancellation, extension, tax, and refund terms in writing.
Check international-patient and follow-up support
Ask who coordinates visas, appointment dates, airport transfers, accommodation, interpretation, discharge records, rehabilitation, and post-return communication. Confirm what happens if the patient needs a longer stay, a different procedure, or local follow-up after returning to Australia or New Zealand.
