Medical Tourism Packages in India: Costs, Inclusions and a Booking Checklist
Compare medical tourism packages in India: hospital bills, support fees, accommodation, exclusions and 10 questions to ask before you pay.
A medical tourism package in India can cover hospital treatment, travel support, or a combination of the two. The name alone tells you very little about what you will actually pay for.
Before comparing prices, establish three things: which medical services the hospital has estimated, which practical services the package includes, and which expenses you must arrange separately. That makes a quoted price useful—and helps you spot costs that could appear later.
This guide explains how to compare medical tourism packages, build a complete travel budget, and prepare for changes in your treatment or return date. It also sets out Indian Medical Hospitality's current four-week support fee, with hospital charges clearly separated.
Planning information checked on 25 September 2026. Treatment decisions and fitness to travel require advice from your treating clinicians.
What is included in a medical tourism package in India?
There is no single standard package. One provider may quote for a procedure and hospital admission; another may quote only for accommodation and coordination. Even an offer described as “all-inclusive” needs an itemised scope.
The hospital's treatment estimate
The hospital should identify the proposed treatment, the clinician or department responsible, and the assumptions behind its estimate. Depending on the case, this could include consultations, investigations, surgeon and anaesthetist fees, operating theatre charges, implants, medicines, and a specified room category and admission period.
Ask which items have a fixed allowance and which are charged according to use. An implant allowance, for example, is meaningful only if the proposed device and permitted alternatives are clear.
Accommodation, travel and practical support
A facilitator's package may cover airport transfers, accommodation outside the hospital, transport to appointments, meals, interpretation, document coordination, and follow-up scheduling.
The distinction between arranging a service and paying for that service matters. “Hotel assistance” might mean help finding a room. “Accommodation included” should specify the property, room, occupants, dates, and charges covered.
Use this table when reading any proposal:
| Service | Details to confirm |
|---|---|
| Hospital care | Named hospital, proposed treatment, room category, included days, tests and clinical fees |
| Accommodation outside hospital | Property, room type, accessibility, number of nights and companion occupancy |
| Meals | Who receives meals, how many per day, dietary arrangements and additional charges |
| Airport transfers | Both arrival and departure, passengers, luggage and vehicle suitability |
| Local transport | Included hospital visits, waiting time and charges for extra trips |
| Interpreter | Language, appointment coverage, availability and any hourly limit |
| Physiotherapy | Whether sessions or only coordination are included; number, provider and location |
| Visa support | Documents and application assistance covered; government fees identified separately |
| Follow-up | Appointment coordination versus consultation fees, and support after returning home |
How much do medical tourism packages in India cost?
The useful figure is the total cost of your proposed journey. A published surgery price or a facilitator's fee is only one part of that calculation.
Indian Medical Hospitality's four-week support fee
Indian Medical Hospitality currently lists the following journey-support prices:
| Four-week support package | Published fee |
|---|---|
| Patient | ₹4,00,000 (INR 400,000) |
| One companion | ₹1,50,000 (INR 150,000) |
| Patient and one companion combined | ₹5,50,000 (INR 550,000) |
Hospital treatment is additional. The hospital provides its own personalised estimate, and the patient pays the hospital directly. Flights, travel insurance, visa fees, medicines, complications and extensions are outside this support fee unless specifically confirmed otherwise in writing. Reconfirm the current price, scope and terms before paying. See Indian Medical Hospitality's package details.
Build your complete budget
For a patient travelling with one companion, start with:
Hospital estimate + ₹5,50,000 for the agreed four-week support package + flights + visa and insurance costs + other excluded expenses.
Then plan separately for a longer stay or changed treatment. Keep that reserve accessible; an unspent contingency is different from a package charge.
Check accommodation and transport against the support agreement before adding them again. Counting an included item twice makes the budget look more expensive; overlooking an excluded item makes it look artificially cheap.
If comparing in US dollars, Australian dollars or another currency, record the conversion date and payment fees. Ask which currency controls the final invoice rather than relying on an approximate website conversion.
How do you compare two medical tourism quotes fairly?
Two totals are comparable only when they describe the same care and support. A lower figure could cover fewer hospital days, a different room, fewer recovery nights, or coordination without the underlying service costs.
Match the clinical assumptions first
Ask each hospital to confirm the proposed procedure and why it is appropriate for your case. If the recommendations differ, discuss that difference with the clinicians before comparing prices.
The following details can change what an estimate covers:
| Treatment category | Questions that make the estimate more useful |
|---|---|
| Joint replacement | One joint or more; implant specification; room and admission allowance; rehabilitation scope |
| Heart treatment | Exact proposed procedure; device or implant assumptions; ICU and ward allowances; investigations |
| Cancer care | Which treatment stage, cycle or course the estimate covers; medicines and investigations specified |
| Fertility treatment | What one quoted cycle includes; medicines, laboratory services, storage and later procedures |
| Dental treatment | Number of teeth or implants; temporary and final restorations; laboratory fees; return visits |
These are questions for the treating team, not a way to choose a treatment yourself. A lower quote for a different clinical plan is not evidence of better value.
Match the practical arrangements next
Compare the same number of people and nights, accommodation standard, meals, transport coverage, and interpreter needs. Confirm whether the package clock starts on arrival, hospital admission or another date.
For example, a four-week package needs a clear answer about accommodation during hospital admission. Is the companion's room retained? Is the patient charged for a reserved room while admitted? What happens to unused nights if discharge or departure changes?
Use the same calculation for every provider:
Comparable planned total = quoted amount + necessary services excluded from that quote.
Keep uncertain costs in a separate column. Ask for a rate or explanation rather than silently treating an unanswered item as free. The written treatment-estimate guide can help you organise the hospital questions.
Which extra costs should you check before paying?
Look closely at expenses that arise when the original plan changes:
- Extra hospital or ICU days, additional investigations, and a revised procedure or device.
- Medicines, dressings, mobility aids, equipment or nursing after discharge.
- Additional hotel nights, companion extensions, meals and transport.
- Extra physiotherapy sessions, interpretation hours or specialist consultations.
- Flight changes, another trip to India, or further care after returning home.
Ask who authorises additional spending and how you will receive updated estimates. Where possible, agree how non-urgent changes will be explained before you incur the cost.
Check insurance and payment terms separately
Ask your insurer in writing about planned treatment, complications, evacuation and follow-up at home. Check that the policy meets those needs before paying. The CDC's medical-tourism guidance recommends reviewing overseas coverage and planning for complications.
For each payment, record the recipient, currency, deposit, balance date and receipt arrangements. Ask whether taxes and bank charges are included, and request the cancellation and refund policy for both the hospital and the support package.
How should you choose a hospital and facilitator?
Verify the treating facility and clinician
Check the specific hospital location being proposed. If JCI accreditation is claimed, use the official JCI directory to verify the organisation rather than relying on a logo or assuming every branch has the same status.
Ask about the treating clinician's relevant qualifications, experience with your proposed procedure, and the hospital's arrangements for complications. Accreditation is useful evidence, but it does not guarantee an individual outcome. CDC guidance explains this distinction.
Understand the facilitator's role and fees
Ask who will coordinate your journey, where support is available, what hours are covered, and how to reach someone if a practical arrangement fails.
Also ask how the facilitator is paid, whether any hospital or referral relationship influences the options presented, and whether you can contact the hospital directly. Compare the actual support scope alongside the fee.
Indian Medical Hospitality coordinates the practical journey. Qualified clinicians make diagnoses, recommend treatment and provide medical care. The company's coordination guide explains that division of responsibilities.
What is the right order for booking treatment travel?
1. Start with a planning enquiry
Explain your home country, treatment category, preferred timing and practical support needs. Establish the appropriate secure route before sending medical records.
2. Arrange hospital review
The hospital may need records, a consultation or further information before offering a preliminary plan. Ask what remains uncertain until an examination in India and how that uncertainty could affect travel arrangements.
Discuss the proposed trip with your usual treating clinician as well. A package purchase should follow the clinical assessment, not substitute for it.
3. Obtain separate written scopes
Request the hospital estimate and the facilitator's support agreement. Check the patient name, treatment assumptions, dates, inclusions, exclusions, payment terms and validity period on each document.
4. Confirm visa and travel arrangements
Check your eligibility and the applicable medical-visa route through the Government of India e-Visa portal. Our India medical visa guide has a separate document checklist. Official medical-visa instructions include a hospital letter identifying the patient and tentative admission or treatment date.
A companion should check the appropriate attendant route. Application assistance does not determine approval, and a package fee does not automatically include government charges. Use the official instructions current at the time of application.
5. Finalise arrival, recovery and return plans
Agree who meets you, where you will stay, when the first appointment is expected, and how you will contact the hospital. Confirm flexibility around the return journey with the treating team and airline.
Keep copies of the support agreement, hospital estimate, receipts and contact details available to both the patient and companion.
What should recovery support actually include?
Accommodation that works after discharge
Ask about lift access, steps, bathroom layout, room access, meal arrangements and travel time to the hospital. Share any practical accessibility requirements through the appropriate planning channel.
Confirm who arranges extra assistance if your needs change. A hotel room, a family companion and professional nursing are different services. A booking described as recovery accommodation does not tell you which clinical support, if any, is available.
A defined companion and transport plan
Check sleeping arrangements, meals, hospital visiting or attendant rules, and transport for the companion. If the patient needs a wheelchair-accessible vehicle or medical transport, ask the treating team what is appropriate and obtain a separate scope where required.
Clarify what “24-hour support” means in any offer: access to a coordinator, emergency contact information, or clinical staff physically present. Those promises describe very different levels of assistance.
A handover for care after you return home
Before leaving India, request your discharge summary, procedure records, investigation results, medication instructions and follow-up plan. Confirm who will answer clinical questions and whether remote appointments attract a separate fee.
Arrange local follow-up before travel where possible. The American College of Surgeons recommends organising care at home and obtaining complete medical records before returning.
Your package end date is not medical clearance to fly. Surgery and prolonged travel can increase blood-clot risk, and recovery activities need to follow clinical advice. Ask the treating team about return travel and seek medical care promptly if a complication is suspected. CDC medical-tourism guidance.
Before you pay: a medical tourism package checklist
Use these ten questions during your final comparison. Keep the answers with the relevant quote rather than relying on a sales conversation alone.
- Who provides my care? Record the hospital location, department and proposed treating clinician.
- What is the medical estimate based on? Identify the procedure, tests, room, included days and assumptions that could change.
- Who receives each payment? Separate hospital charges, support fees and third-party expenses.
- What services are actually paid for? Distinguish booking assistance from included accommodation, meals, transport and sessions.
- What does my companion receive? Check the person count, room, meals, transport and additional-person charges.
- When does support start and finish? Confirm the dates, treatment delays, hospital admission days and unused services.
- What happens if the stay is longer? Request extension rates and availability for the patient and companion.
- What if treatment or travel is cancelled? Read the deposit, cancellation and refund terms for each provider, including visa refusal or a changed clinical recommendation.
- Who handles complications? Identify the hospital contact and payment arrangements; keep clinical and practical support responsibilities clear.
- What happens after I go home? Record the follow-up clinician, records handover, contact route and possible charges.
A provider may need time to confirm an answer. Mark that item as unresolved and understand its effect on your budget before committing.
Frequently asked questions
Are medical tourism packages in India all-inclusive?
The term does not establish a standard scope. Check the written inclusions, service limits and exclusions. Hospital treatment, accommodation, flights and aftercare may be sold separately even when a package covers several parts of the journey.
Are hospital bills included in Indian Medical Hospitality's fee?
No. The four-week journey-support fee is separate from hospital treatment. The hospital issues a personalised estimate, and the patient pays the hospital directly. Read both documents together to understand the planned total.
Can I book directly with an Indian hospital?
You can ask the hospital's international patient department which arrangements it offers. Then decide whether you need additional help with accommodation, transport, interpretation or companion logistics. Check for overlapping services before paying a separate coordinator.
Which Indian city is best for medical tourism?
Start with the clinical team and facility suitable for your case. Then compare flight connections, accommodation accessibility, appointment travel time, language support and recovery arrangements. A city's popularity alone cannot tell you whether a particular hospital and journey plan meet your needs.
How long should I stay in India?
Ask your treating team about assessment, treatment, follow-up and fitness to travel. The required stay varies by the clinical plan and recovery. A four-week support package describes the service period; it does not predict how quickly a patient will recover.
What happens if I need more than four weeks of support?
Indian Medical Hospitality discusses extensions separately. Obtain the extra charges, accommodation availability, companion arrangements and revised scope in writing. Ask about extension terms when comparing the initial package so the process is clear before you need it.
